While the story unfolds on a beautiful summer's day in London, 1923 (five years after the close of World War I), Clarissa Dalloway (Oscar Winner Vanessa Redgrave) recalls a summer in the country, in 1890, when she was young and beautiful and very much courted (played by exciting newcomer Natascha McElhone). Now, some thirty years later, excited and anxious, Mrs. Dalloway attends to the final preparations for the elegant party she is giving that evening at her affluent London home - everything must be perfect! But her plans are interrupted by the sudden return of the once-dashing suitor she rejected thirty years ago, and her life becomes strangely intertwined with that of a tragic young man, a shell-shocked was veteran (Rupert Graves) whom she will never actually meet, but whose destiny will strike a chord of truth deep in her soul.
