Description / Plot Summary: Chocolat
A young woman traveling in Cameroon slips into languid memories of her coming of age in 1950s French Colonial Africa. This silent and subtle tale of repression, frustration, imperialism, and racism unfurls in her memories of a strained adolescence as the daughter of a district governor of French West Africa. Innocent relations with austere houseboy Protee stand strongest in her memories, as do the ramifications of a disastrous visit by a stranded group of fellow imperialists. The slight and tense atmosphere of their tentative home in Africa is shattered by missteps of human nature and human error.
